FORMAT:

All hands will be double deck.  All hands will be 20 points minimum for meld to make board and 20 points minimum for tricks to save meld.

Six rounds will initially be played.  Each round will be played within the 55 minute time limit, OR to 500 points (whichever comes first).  A winners bracket and a consolation bracket will then established and two more rounds will be played.  The winners bracket shall consist of the top four teams at the conclusion of the initial six rounds, and will continue using their win/loss and accumulated points record.  The consolation bracket shall consist of the remaining teams and will start their records over for the additional two rounds.

The winner of the tournament shall be determined as the team with the most wins at the end of all eight rounds.  The consolation winner shall be determined as the team with the most wins at the end of the two additional rounds.  In the event of multiple teams having the same record, total accumulative scores will determine the rank, with the highest score receiving the highest rank.

A player from each team will keep score.  Scorekeepers shall:

Verify that the correct players are at the table for the round.

Record, add, and total scores on their score sheet.

After each hand, each team’s scoresheet will be compared and verified for accuracy by the opponent’s scorekeeper.

At the end of the round, the scorekeepers shall circle the winning team and sign both scoresheets to indicate agreement on the final score.

Return both score sheets to the scoring table at the end of the round.

Note that scorekeepers are solely responsible for the accuracy of the scoresheets that are submitted to the tournament recorder.  The tournament recorder is not responsible for any errors on the scoresheets and will not make any corrections.  No changes will be made to any scoresheet once it has been submitted to the tournament recorder.

As a courtesy, please do not ask the tournament recorder to inform you of your team’s relative position in the tournament.  Standings will be posted before completion of the following round if possible.  Each team will also receive a “mini” score card to carry with them so they may write the scores from each game to verify against the postings on the game board.

No visitors will be allowed in the tournament room while the tournament is in progress.  Only Tournament Directors, assistants, and players may be in the room while the tournament is in progress.

TABLE ROTATION:

Each team will receive a team number at check-in.  Teams given an odd number will be assigned to the corresponding table and will not move for the duration of the tournament.  Teams in which a member has a disability making rotating to another table very difficult may request an odd team number. To accommodate individuals with a disability, the Tournament Directors will do their best to honor stationary table requests made prior to the registration deadline.

Teams given even numbers will initially be assigned to a table for the first round and will rotate to the next higher-numbered table after each round.

STARTING TIMES:

All games will begin at the times scheduled.  It is the player's responsibility to be present at the start of each round of play.  Failure of a team or team member to be present and ready to play at the start time will result in a 10 point penalty for each minute late, to be added to the opposing, present team's score.  It is the tardy team member's responsibility to immediately check in with a Tournament Director so the time absent and penalty amount may be established.  After 10 minutes, the team will be disqualified for that round and will receive a reporting score of 0 points.  The other team will be treated as a bye.

The Tournament Directors will be the official time keepers and will announce start and stop times as well as advance warnings of the end of each round.  The Tournament Director will state the OFFICIAL TIME.

Once a round has started, expect to remain at your table until your game is completed.  In the event you must leave due to a medical condition or a bathroom break, a sub will be provided (Tournament Director or assistant.)  Exception to this rule is at tables where Tournament Directors are playing to cover any time away from table to perform necessary tournament functions.

SHUFFLE:

At the beginning of each round, it is suggested that the cards be cut by all four players and high card deals first.  Any other method of determination of first dealer agreed to by all players at the table is acceptable.

The order of the cards from highest to lowest is A, 10, K, Q, J.

The cards are to be handled only by the dealer who is required to shuffle them a minimum of seven times.  Exceptions to this rule will be made for handicapped players.  In this instance, their partner may shuffle and deal for them.

DEALING:

The deal will be rotated in a clockwise direction for each hand until the round is completed.  Dealing starts with the player to the left of the dealer and continues in a clockwise rotation until all the cards are dealt.  Four or five cards may be dealt at a time to evenly distribute the cards.  Any card exposed during the dealing process, may be re-inserted and shuffled back into the deck upon agreement of all players, or all cards may be collected and the second deck of cards may be used for the re-deal.  An opposing team may request a re-deal at any time, prior to any player bidding, provided a legitimate complaint has been validated by a Tournament Director.  If a legitimate complaint is not validated by a Tournament Director, and a delay of game incures, the Tournament Director may award 50 points to the dealing team.

The cards are to be offered for a cut to the player to the dealer’s right.  If the cards are dealt without a cut being offered, the opposing team may request a re-deal, without validation by a Tournament Director.  There will be no penalty.

If a cut is made:

       Cards are only cut once.

Cards are lifted by the upper portion of the pack clear of the lower portion, leaving no less than four cards.  The former lower portion is then replaced on top of the former upper portion.

It is the responsibility of each player to ensure that they have been dealt twenty (20) cards before play begins.  If there is a misdeal noted before any bidding has started, all cards will be collected and the second deck of cards will be used and offered to be cut, and dealt by the same dealer.  If the same dealer misdeals twice in a row, no points will be awarded and the cards will be passed to the next player to deal the hand.

If at the end of a hand a player is without cards, the remaining cards will go with the last trick turned. (This trick will count as last trick.)

BIDDING:

Bidding begins to the dealer’s left and continues clockwise.

The lowest bid is 50 and continues in multiples of 1 until 60, then in multiples of 5 until 100, and in multiples of 10 after 100.

The ONLY allowable bids are “PASS” or a bid that includes all the numbers, such as 51, 55, etc.  A “by me” or “I’ll save” or “save” or “open” type bid results in the offender’s partner not being able to bid.

All players must bid in turn.  Bidding out of turn will result in the offending team not being able to bid and the bid will revert back to the last legal bid.  Call the TD for assistance.

If the first three bidders all pass, the bid is considered “dropped” on the dealer for 50 points.

The last player to bid names trump.  The named suit must have a marriage.

MELDING:

No one will meld prior to trump being declared.

The first marriage laid on the table by the bid taker is trump.

Aces must be declared and placed on the table.

No meld will be counted after the first card is played (other than aces – see forced renege).

All players must lay all meld out on the table if they are including it.

It is the responsibility and legal right of all players to see and count the meld of all players.  All meld should remain on the table until all players have had a chance to see and count the meld.

If the team with the bid cannot make board, they are set, the hand is not played, AND the opponents get their meld (provided it totals 20 or more) AND the bid amount.

If the bidder has no marriage, the bidder’s cards must be shown to the opponents, they are set, the hand is not played, AND the opponents get their meld (provided it totals 20 or more) with no trump called AND the bid amount.  If it is discovered that the bidder has a marriage and 20 or more meld, the hand must be played.

GAME PLAY:

Any exposed card(s) will be kept laying face up on the table and must be played at the first legal opportunity.  The partner cannot lead out in that suit unless forced.  If there is an exposed card before or during bidding, the partner may not call that suit trump.

Tricks must be kept in the order they are collected and kept by the player collecting the tricks.  The trick will be considered closed when the trick is turned down and placed in front of the player collecting the tricks.

All cards must be played to the table one at a time.  A card hitting the table is considered played.  All cards must be played (even if there is a “lock” on the remaining cards).

If during a hand, both teams reach or exceed 500 points, the team taking the bid shall be declared the winning team regardless of the total score.

SETS:

If the bidder fails to make their bid, the non-bidders will receive the amount of the bid.  The non-bidders will also receive their meld, if 20 or more, and their points pulled, if 20 or more.

BYES:

If there are an odd number of teams, the Tournament Directors will make every effort to provide a fill-in team if possible.  If not possible, a team receiving the bye will receive the win, with an average of the score of their other six games played.

BOSTONS:

A boston occurs when a team wins all 50 points in one hand (as long as they make their bid) and will receive their meld, points pulled (50), and 250 bonus points, or a total final score of 500, whichever is greater.  The team pulling the boston will receive an automatic win.  A Tournament Director must be present to view the last trick of the hand so that the bonus can be verified and awarded.

RENEGES:

A player cannot be forced to renege. Therefore, in order to avoid a renege, the player has the privilege of correcting the play before the trick is closed.  (This is the ONLY time a card may be corrected.)  Once the trick is closed however, the play may not be corrected.  All players have the right to ask to see a trick BEFORE it is closed.

A renege occurs when a player:

1.  Fails to follow suit when able.

2.  Fails to beat the highest card when able.

3.  Fails to declare aces before the first card is played.

4.  Fails to trump where possible when out of a suit.

When a player wishes to call a renege, he/she is to let the other players at the table know that they are calling a renege.  At that time, the players are to immediately stop play and wait for the player to call a Tournament Director to the table to verify the renege.

When the Tournament Director is at the table, the player is to tell the TD:

  1. What type of renege it is.
  2. What two cards are in the book to prove the renege.

The Tournament Director will then look through the books to verify or deny the renege.

If a renege during play is called and not proven, the person calling the renege has committed a renege and the penalty will go against them.

If a renege is called and the tricks are not in the correct order, the renege will go against that team.

Calling a renege is the act of a single person - not the team!  There is to be NO discussion between the team members whether or not to call the renege or what proves the renege.  If you have questions about what a renege is, or how to call it during tournament play, please call a Tournament Director or assistant to your table.

PENALTIES:

If the bidding pair reneges during play, the hand stops, and the opponents will receive the bid, their own meld (provided it totals 20 or more) plus points earned (provided it totals 20 or more). The bidding pair will not be awarded their own meld or points earned.

If the non-bidding pair reneges during play, the hand stops, and the bidders will receive the bid, their own meld (provided it totals 20 or more) plus points earned (provided it totals 20 or more). The non-bidding pair will not be awarded their own meld or points earned.

If a team is disqualified, the round will be treated as a bye.

CHEATING:

Cheating OF ANY KIND will not be tolerated and will result in a disqualification from the rest of the tournament and NO MONEY WILL BE REFUNDED.  Cheating includes but is not limited to:  1) facial gestures,  2) table tapping,  3) hand signaling,  4) gaps in cards,  5) raising particular cards higher than others,  6) table talking during bidding or before trump is called or while hand is being played, and  7) playing or holding cards in an indicating manner.
